Topic: Ergonomics design of work station and mobile utility Van for reducing work stress among women in police

Summary of PhD Project:

​

Background: There has been lot of emphasis on increasing women work force in police due to increasing crime against women and children. However, there are less attention paid to formulate favourable policy that ensures motivational job benefits and work place amenities in usual male dominated profession such as Police. From literature, it has been found that there is lot of stress faced by women working in police station due to negligence of many work place facilities.

Objectives:

1. To quantify occupational well being, perceived well being and environmental stress undergone by women in all women and common type police station.

2. To investigate existing work place (office) amenities in police station and identify its problems

3. To propose preliminary design (2-D) for office and transport vehicle considering issues of womanhood

Methodology:

1. Use of field surveys, interview and discussions to investigate work stress of women in police station

2. Use of quantitative tools such as STATISTICA and SPSS in office to analyse survey results and data obtained from literature

3. Interpretation of data and also comparison to that obtained among women police in China (during visit to Shantou University)

4. Sketch of Work station and transport vehicle using Room Sketcher program.

Key results and Conclusions

1. Work stress is higher among women police due to lack of separate washrooms, restrooms, child care facility and also job benefits compared to other public organizations

2. Staff among women police is much higher in China as compared to India, however, work stress remains higher due to lack of basic facilities for women

3. A minimal improvement in infrastructure including furniture has significantly increased satisfaction and optimism level among women police

4. Proposed 2-D design of work place and modular Van can cater basic needs of woman by ensuring safety and privacy.
